Tired of "no reservations" policies? Here's where you can actually get a table for eight without camping out at 4pm.
Organising dinner for a group in Sydney is its own special kind of hell. Half the good places don't take bookings. The other half are booked out three weeks in advance.
Here's where to take a group without losing your mind.
The Reliables
Italian Family Restaurants — Leichhardt & Petersham
Tables for eight? No problem. Tables for twelve? Also fine. They've been doing this forever and they'll keep doing it forever. The food's consistent, the portions are generous, and nobody's going to rush you out.
Best for: Birthday dinners, family gatherings, when you need everyone fed
Price: $25-35 mains
Book: A few days ahead is usually enough
Pub Bistros — Across the Inner West
The Inner West does pub food well. The Bob Hawke, The Vic, The Courthouse — all of them do group bookings, all of them have space, and none of them are precious about it.
Best for: Casual catch-ups, work lunches, when someone might bail
Price: $22-30 mains
Book: Day before is usually fine
The "Nice But Still Doable"
Shared Plates Spots
Places that do the "order a bunch of things to share" model work well for groups. Everyone eats, nobody has to commit to one dish, and it's easier to split the bill.
Tip: Book for 6 even if you're 8. Adding two is easier than booking for 8 from scratch.
The "Don't Even Try"
Places with 12 seats total. Places that are "walk-in only." Places where the owner says "maybe just turn up and see" (you won't get a table).
Love these places for date nights. Hate them for group dinners.
The Bill Situation
Always ask when you book if they do split bills. Some do, some don't, and there's nothing worse than the awkward end-of-night calculation.
Split-bill friendly: Most chains, pub bistros
Prepare for: Smaller places often don't — bring cash or Revolut
