Spent two weekends hitting every new cafe on Illawarra Road. Here's what's worth your time — and what's just posing.
Marrickville's been "up and coming" for years now. But lately, the coffee scene specifically has hit a new gear. Whether that's good or bad depends on what kind of local you are.
Me? I welcome our new espresso overlords. Let's talk about what's actually good.
The Ones Worth Your Time
Industry Beans — Marrickville Metro
Yes, it's in a shopping centre. No, that doesn't make it bad. The fit-out is slick without being annoying, and the coffee is consistently excellent. Single origins rotate weekly, batch brew is actually drinkable. $4.50-$5 for standard orders.
The Little Place That Could — Illawarra Road
I'm not naming it because it's already too busy. Find it yourself. It's the one with the queue on Saturday mornings and the single origin that tastes like the tasting notes promise. $4 flat white, actual food, WiFi that works.
Corner Store Revival
One of those converted milk bars that's actually good, not just Instagrammable. They kept the milk bar aesthetic without being precious about it. Coffee's solid, toast is reasonably priced, staff are locals.
The Ones That Are Just Posing
The Aesthetic One on Marrickville Road
You know the one. White walls, potted plants, $7 for avocado on sourdough (that's just avocado. on sourdough.). The coffee's fine. But fine isn't worth $5 when there's better around the corner.
The Influencer Spot
Great for photos. Average for everything else. If you want to sit and work, this isn't it. If you want to be seen, this is it. Your call.
The Old Guard Still Standing
Before we get too excited about the new kids, let's acknowledge the places that have been here forever and still do it right:
Coffee Alchemy — Still the benchmark. Still roasting their own. Still worth the detour if you're not in Marrickville.
The old Greek cafe on the corner — No Instagram, no single origins, just strong Greek coffee and old men playing cards. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
The Verdict
Marrickville's coffee scene isn't "having a moment" — it's arrived. The question now is which ones will stick around and which are just passing through. My money's on the places that focus on coffee first, aesthetic second.
